Striped Fingerless Gloves

Materials: Size 8 dpns, 6 buttons (approximately 1/4 inch diameter), sewing needle and thread.

Yarn: Malabrigo worsted weight yarn (per test knitter #1, less than 50 g each of three colors)

For Mardi Gras I used Yellow (A), Green (B), and Purple (C) yarn.

Instructions:

CO 36 stitches in color C (purple) Join to knit in the round.
Rounds 1-4: [K2P2] x 9. Cut yarn, leaving 10 inch tail.
Change to color A (yellow).
Round 5: (K2tog, knit 7) x 4
Rounds 6-8: Knit ( 32 stitches)
Rounds 9-12: Change color B (green) and Knit 4 rounds.
Rounds 13-16: Change to color A and Knit 4 rounds.
Rounds 17-20: Change color B and Knit 4 rounds.Repeat rounds 13-20, creating alternating bands of color, for a total of 6 bands (not including ribbing), ending after color B (green).
[ At points where color change occurs, unused color may be carried up by twisting with the used color at the beginning of each round until it is reused in the next band]

Increase rows:
During increase rounds, continue alternating colors as established.
(KFB, knit 15) x2
knit 3 rounds. (34 stitches)
(KFB, K 16) x2
Knit 3 rounds (36 stitches)
(KFB, K 17) x2
Knit 3 rounds (38 stitches)
Continue in pattern for 2 bands without increasing (end on color A)

R glove- (color B) Knit 6 stitches and place on holder, knit to end of round.
Cast on 4 stitches. Wrap & turn next stitch to join in the round and continue x 3 rows. (36 stitches)[for explanation of w&t, please see KnitWiki Wrap & Turn]
L glove: (color B) Knit 15 stitches, place next 6 stitches on holder. Cast on 4 stitches, wrap stitches to join and continue round. Knit 3 rounds to complete color band (36 stitches).

Both gloves: Continue pattern for 12 rounds (3 bands) ending with color A for a total of 15 colored stripes, not including ribbing.
Switch to color C (purple), Knit 1 round.
Next Round: [K2P2] x 9
Repeat for two rounds.
Next round: Bind-off in pattern.

Thumb: place 6stitches from holder on needle. Pick us an additional 10 stitches on 2 more DPNs. Using 4 DPNs, knit in color B (green) for a total of 4 rows. Switch to color A (yellow). Knit one row. Then, [K2P2] x 4 for 4 rows. Bind off in pattern.

Flap. Above ribbed row and below thumb, pick up 14 stitches along column spanning 6 of the color bands (not including ribbing). Your needle and knitting will now be perpendicular to the orientation of the glove. Knit 1 row such that flap will lie down towards the back of glove.
Next row- [P2, K2] x 3, P2
Next row [k2,P2] x3, K2. Continue in pattern for a total of 7 rows. Bind off all stitches on the right side. Cut yarn leaving 10" tail.

Finishing:
Using the tail and the leftover yarn from casting on, sew down the upper and lower edges of the flap. Sew three buttons through both flap and glove, thereby securing it in the mock-closed position. Weave in all yarn ends.

**This is an untested pattern...please notify author of any errata in comments below.**

This is a pattern for a felted stuffed toy (finished dimensions 14" x 4"), knit entirely in garter stitch in 3 pieces, then felted. Its sparkly exterior is meant to be reminiscent of the sugary pink coating of the classic American Easter candy, the marshmallow PEEP.

Materials: Crystal Palace Yarns ICELAND (Super Bulky Wool), 245 yards

(approximately 2.25 skeins) in color 4891 "Strawberry Pink." Alternately, you may try a double strand of a worsted weight wool, such as Malabrigo Worsted (requiring twice the yardage).

Trendsetter AURA 245 yards (approximately 1.7 skeins) in Pink.

Any 100% worsted or bulky weight wool yarn in Black, 1 yard.

US 10 Straight knitting needles

Large embroidery needle

Instructions:

PEEP Front & Back Panels

Holding 1 strand of Wool yarn together with 1 strand of Aura, CO 15 stitches.

Row 1: Knit

Rows 2-11: Knit, increasing 1 stitch at both edges every other row x 5 (25 stitches)

Rows 12-32: Knit

Rows 33-42: Knit, decreasing 1 stitch at both edges every other row x 5 (15 stitches)

Rows 43-44: Knit

Rows 45-53: Knit, increasing 1 stitch at both edges every 3 rows x 3 (21 stitches)

Rows 54-60: Knit

Rows 61-68: Knit, decreasing 1 stitch at both edges every other row x 4 (13 stitches)

Row 69: Knit

Row 70-75: Knit, increasing 1 stitch at both edges every 3 rows x 2 (17 stitches)

Row 76-77: Knit

Row 78: Knit 8 (place on stitch holder), bind off 1 stitch, Knit 8

Row 79: Knit 8, Turn

For Each Ear:

Row 80-81: Knit

Rows 82-93: Knit, increasing 1 stitch on outer edge and decreasing 1 stitch

on inner edge every 3rd row x 4.

Rows 94-95: Knit

Row 96: Knit, decreasing at both edges x 1

Row 97: knit (6 stitches)

Row 98: bind off all 6 stitches.

Attatch yarn and repeat Rows 80-98 for second ear.

Repeat this panel to create back of PEEP.

Side Panel: Holding 1 strand of each yarn together, CO 10 stitches

Knit (garter stitch) until piece measures 50" from CO edge, or until piece is long enough to wrap edge of work. Bind off.

FINISHING:

Using black wool, stitch eyes and nose to front panel, trying to replicate spacing on a typical marshmallow PEEP.

Holding 1 strand of wool together with 1 strand of Aura, sew side panel to PEEP front panel with eyes on outside. Then, leaving a small gap at the bottom back of PEEP(~ 2.5 inches), sew back panel to side panel.

Felt in machine washer. Stuff PEEP, being careful not to overstuff so that it will remain partially flat like the marshmallow PEEPs. Sew hole closed with AURA.

Bulky or Super Bulky yarn, 105 yards

Scissors

GUAGE: 12 stitches and 18 rows to 4"/10cm of St st using size 7 dpns and yarn. NOTE: The needles are smaller than recommended for this yarn, thus creating a stiffer felted feel to the stocking.

Plastic bag "yarn" preparation": Using standard scissors, cut the front panel of targets from the plastic bags. Using scissors, cut between rows of targets from L to R and stopping before the R edge with one target left. Cut between the adjacent horizontal row of targets in the opposite direction from R to L, again stopping before the L edge. Continue reversing these horizontal cuts so as to create a single long series of "S" curves as follows:
The yarn need not be "spun." It can be twisted and compressed as you knit, allowing some "flags" at the S curves to create a fuzzy effect. At the end of each bag/strip, simply tie strip to the next strip...the tie ends also gives it more fuzziness.

CUFF: Cast on 48 sts, using Size 9 DPN and plastic bag "yarn." Evenly distribute stitches over 4 needles (12 on each) and join, being careful not to twist. Work approximately 22 rnds in garter stitch (K1 rnd, P1 rnd), or until cuff measures ~4."
LEG: Change to bulky yarn and Size 7 DPNs.

Rowan Classic Cashsoft Baby DK yarn (50% extra fine merino,

40% acrylic microfibre, 10% cashmere): 2 skeins (284 yards)

main color - I used SH 800, and 25- 50 yards contrasting color.

Addi Turbo 24 inch circular needle, size 2.5 mm (or size US 2).

Crochet hook.

***I never did figure out the details of the finishing edges as they are old crochet instructions and I have never formally learned crochet. I worked the beading crochet edge as written and threaded a braided trim through the holes. I did NOT attach the picot or the baby shell edgings.

*****I added three contrast stitches to the lower part of the beak to more closely approximate a pelican's beak.
